Reflections on Collaboration

New York, Chicago & Sarasota: A collaboration of Amy Ernst, surrealist, Kate Hendrickson, paper – pastel – pencils, and Grace Howl, abstract painter. Each artist collaborative worked on two canvases and one paper piece; sharing and using each other’s media to create three unique pieces of art to Benefit Pines of Sarasota Foundation. (2018)

American Pi

American Pi: Quilted Visions from a ‘Math Artist’ – A John Sims Project. Grace’s art space hosted the show. John asked me to participate by creating an original painting using my own artistic methodology of Pi in an Abstract Expressionistic Style to hang with his work during the show. (2019)

Any Given Child

A true believe in art as therapy, Howl opened her studio to work with students from Title One Schools where arts programs are not part of the curriculum. Any Given Child program enabled 160 students, age 8-9, over the course of 4 days to experience painting, dancing, and printmaking. (2018 and 2019)

 

2020 New College students, Sarasota Contemporary Dance – Leymis Wilmott:  Each student of SCD choreographed their own dance based on Howl’s inspiring paintings and Wilmott’s fundamental dance principles. There was a presentation of their “Final Course” outcomes. A Collaborative painting with students and Howl, which now hangs at New College Campus.

2019 Camp Mariposa: Howl opened her studio to teens from Camp Mariposa for an “Art from the Heart” creation session. Camp Mariposa provides therapy and a safe haven to help break the cycle of family addiction and abuse. Twelve teens participated and each created original artwork then sold during a special art opening at Grace Howl Contemporary Art with all proceeds to benefit Camp Mariposa. 

2019 & 2017 AIA – 10 X 10 Events: Howl was chosen to speak at the AIA 10x10 Event Art Ovation Hotel. Each of 10 speakers are allowed 10 slides and 5 minutes to present a topic. Howl’s 2017 topic: “Journey into My Mind and Creative Process”. Howl’s 2019 topic: “Appreciating Abstract Art”.

2019 The Chakra Project: A collaboration with Jamie Coffey and Paul Schuler was interactive experience based on the seven Chakra Painting of Howl, Schuler sound and Coffey, meditations, mantras and yoga.

2019 & 2018 Poetry & Piano: A collaboration between Howl, Lucia Blinn, poet, (former advertising copywriter in NYC) and Jeffrey G, an attorney from Naples and self-taught pianist and artist. Invited guests were seated amongst a backdrop of Howl’s lyrical paintings while being regales with alternating piano music and poetry.

2018 Rosemary District Association Sarasota, FL: Howl designed an outdoor wall mural 16’ x 40’ on a building wall where Howl had over 67 participants from the Rosemary neighborhood painting with her in this one day. The event was created as a community building experience and to inspire the community to become an art & design district. 

2017 Institute for Psycho-geographic Adventure (IPA from NYC): Experiment 42.000 at the Ringling Museum. Over the course of 2 days I had ‘participants’ help me paint an 11’ x 6’ wall muralat the Museum. Participants were interviewed prior to and after participating in a variety of ‘encounters’ based on needs or wants. It was a thrilling and exciting experience. Created as part of the Museum’s ‘New Stages’ series of contemporary performances.  

2017 ALSO Youth Organization: Advocacy, Leadership, Support, Outreach provides services educational programs, advocacy and referrals for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning you ages 14-24. As a member of Interior Design Society, Grace volunteered to create a large indoor mural within ALSO Youth newly designed space. The youth participated in the painting the mural with Grace. This project along with all the efforts of the Interior Design Society of Sarasota remodel of the ALSO space, earned IDS Sarasota – “2018 Outstanding Charity Event Award”.

2017 Sarasota Architectural Foundation: Howl was one of eight (8) artists chosen to paint an authentic Eames Chair that was auctioned off during MOD Weekend to benefit the SAF Organization.

2017 Center for Architecture-Sarasota: Howl was chosen (to paint a construction hat) and was included to participate in “Construction Helmet Painting”: A Traveling Show. 

2016 & 2017 Southeast Guide Dogs: Grace was chosen to team with private donors (2016) Painted a Southeast Guide Dog sculpture “Popcorn” for Sandy and Mike in memory of their retired SE Guide Dog. (2017) I was teamed with Scene Magazine/Café L Europe owners to paint a Southeast Guide Dog Puppy sculpture (Ms. Diamond) the businesses 60th anniversary. 

2013 Art Off Palm – Howl in collaboration with Jake Brady, orchestrated Art Off Palm - Art Event in the early days of the Rosemary District. It was a benefit to support ‘Volunteer Community Connection’. The organization provides training and coordination of volunteers who work with all charities and foundations within the Sarasota County. It was well attended with a line of people a block and a half long at opening time.
